We are in awe of the creativity and connection that blossomed at the ECH Intergenerational Nature Play Workshop held at Carrick Hill on 3 October during the Nature Festival 2024. Families across generations—grandparents, parents, children, and aunts—came together to learn, create, and explore the wonders of nature.
Participants delved into fascinating facts about bees and butterflies, discovering, for example, that honey bee wings can beat up to 230 times per second! Everyone had the opportunity to craft bees on a stick from natural materials, bringing movement and color into their gardens while sparking curiosity about native bees and their habitats.
Nature and Art: A Connection for All Ages
One of the workshop’s key lessons was that “less can be more in nature.” Participants were encouraged to create ephemeral art, incorporating natural found objects that could eventually return to the earth. The group decorated large gum leaves and crafted Ikebana-style displays, inspired by nature’s simplicity, all while focusing on engaging their five senses.
The activities provided a wonderful opportunity for both young and older generations to connect over shared experiences and stories. Nature play is not only fun but also a powerful way to foster a sense of wonder and connection—between people and the environment.
Looking Forward
The event was a huge success, with attendees enjoying the beauty of the natural surroundings and the chance to bond with family members in a meaningful, creative way. Workshops like these are a reminder that nature offers a space for curiosity, creativity, and intergenerational connections.
We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future!
